They are unsigned, but their provenance and style make it certain that they are by Mackintosh. He exhibited a ‘Design for a Country Inn’ under his own name at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in , which may have been connected with this project. Unfortunately there is no visual record of the exhibited design, and it is not mentioned in a lengthy review of the architectural section of the exhibition published in the Glasgow Herald. Lennoxtown and the surrounding area formed part of the estate of the Lennox family of Lennox Castle, and Mackintosh’s elevations are countersigned by the proprietress, Cecilia Peareth Lennox. An extensive archive of estate papers survives, 3 but despite this it has not been possible to identify the inn with certainty. It had an attic and a basement, although the fall of the site meant the basement was above ground at the rear. The absence of windows in the end elevations implies that it formed part of a terrace. Mackintosh proposed adding a staircase in a new lean-to at the rear, giving access to three attic bedrooms and a bathroom. At the front, the drawings show horizontal windows on the ground floor, with small square panes.

The NRL may push the start of its season back to June 11 — a fortnight beyond the proposed May 28 relaunch — if the Warriors are not given permission to train as a group while locked down in quarantine. Despite the NRL’s Project Apollo head Wayne Pearce labelling next month’s return a “definite” after marathon meetings on Wednesday, the NSW government still needs to approve the Warriors’ request to use an isolated facility on the far north coast when it arrives in Australia.
Stephen Kearney’s side is expected to know within days whether it will be granted an exemption to the two-week lockdown, allowing the 16 clubs to begin group training on May 4. Sources familiar with the Project Apollo discussions told the Herald the NRL has a contingency for the third round of the season to begin on June 11 so as not to disadvantage the Warriors if they are forced into individual quarantine. On another pivotal day for the code, it was confirmed again all clubs will keep their points from the opening two rounds despite calls for the standings to be reset.
The format of the competition won’t likely be confirmed until early next week as Australian Rugby League Commission boss Peter V’landys holds delicate talks with broadcasters Nine, the publisher of this masthead, and Foxtel. But there is no chance of the NRL adopting a conference system splitting the Sydney and out-of-town clubs. The Warriors are waiting to hear whether they will be allowed to train as a group upon their return to Australia. Credit: AAP.

Dillian Whyte has never been closer to the fabled world title wonderland that he has long campaigned for yet the final step is the furthest and most treacherous of all. Anthony Joshua has raised doubts about whether Dillian Whyte will earn a world heavyweight title fight against himself or Tyson Fury, says promoter Eddie Hearn. Dillian Whyte was far lighter on the scales and perhaps much of that was the burden that is no longer on his shoulders.
World heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has hinted at a return to the professional wrestling ring.

The Lenox Factory Outlet store in Mt. Pleasant Township is shuttering, putting an end to a long history at the glass plant. Lenox, which sells tabletop and giftware items, announced Tuesday all outlet and warehouse stores will permanently close, citing difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The site along East Main Street originally was home to the Lenox Crystal manufacturing plant, which produced crystal stemware glass and gift items. Competition from foreign imports, coupled with a lack of demand for fine crystal, caused the facility to close in January , leaving workers jobless.
After the facility closed, Westmoreland County officials purchased the building with the hope they could save some jobs for employees of the manufacturing plant while honing their skills.

One of our favorite romantic bars in Brooklyn is this special, small spot in Greenpoint, near McGorlick Park. The dark lighting, moody green wall colors and artful stainglass details make it one of our go-tos. It helps that most tables are set up only for two.
Traditionally newspapers could be divided into ‘quality’, serious-minded newspapers usually referred to as ‘broadsheets’ due to their large size and ‘tabloids’, or less serious newspapers. But these definitions no longer apply, as several ‘quality’ papers in Scotland have followed the lead of The Independent , by adopting a tabloid format which some prefer to refer to as ‘compact’ to avoid being associated with their more downmarket peers. In Scotland two broadsheet newspapers have made the switch to ‘compact’ format.
In addition to newspapers published in Scotland, including Scottish editions of United Kingdom newspapers, a number of local newspapers published in other parts of the British Isles are widely available.

The bridge is located beside Overtoun House, and crosses the gorge of the Overtoun Burn. It was built by H. See that link for much more information on the avenue as a whole, and for an account of the avenue’s official opening, an event that took place when the guests were assembled at the eastern end of this bridge. At the top of the avenue, “the approach spans the romantic and picturesque Overtoun Burn, near the mansion house, by a magnificent new bridge consisting of three spans: the centre one of 32 feet and the side ones of 10 feet each.
The total length of the bridge is feet, and width 14 feet, and its height over 50 feet from the bed of the burn to the top of the parapet wall. The style of the bridge is [Scottish] Baronial, in harmony with the style of the home. It has taken a year to build the bridge alone. See Link for what is almost certainly the quarry referred to there; it also supplied some of the stone used to built Overtoun House the remainder being taken from the building site itself.
The straight-line distance from the quarry to the house is a little under three-quarters of a mile, and as noted at Link in connection with the avenue, the light railway was about three-quarters of a mile long. No trace of the light railway remains, but my own opinion based on familiarity with the topography of the area is that its course probably corresponded fairly closely with that of the present-day footpath that leads from the entrance of the quarry, past the Woodland Trust’s “Welcome Cairn” sculpture and through the nearby gate, and then along a curving footpath that meets the road about 90 metres to the east of Overtoun House; that route would not require a crossing of the Overtoun Burn.
In more recent times, interest in Overtoun Bridge has increased on account of the appearance of many documentaries and articles about so-called “dog suicides”; see Link at Skeptoid for a sober assessment.
