The Miller-led study, conducted between spring and fall , included male athletes in 41 middle schools, half of which were randomly selected to participate in the program.
This effect persisted through the year of follow-up. Male athletes at schools that implemented the program as intended were more than twice as likely to report positive bystander behaviors a year after its conclusion than male athletes at schools that did not participate in the program. Improvements also emerged in athletes’ recognition of what constitutes abusive behaviors as well as their attitudes related to gender equity.
The results were even more pronounced when accounting for implementing the program as intended i. This means we can expect positive results if we scale up the Coaching Boys Into Men program to reach many more youth across our region and hopefully move the needle on this epidemic of violence.

If your middle school child wants to start dating, you might think twice. A recent study of teens living in northeast Georgia found that early dating interferes with school success and leads to other bad things. The Healthy Teens Longitudinal Study followed over students for seven years, from the sixth through 12th grades. It looked at frequency of dating in relationship to high school dropout rates and teacher ratings of study skills. The findings were published in the Journal of Research on Adolescence.
Some students never or hardly ever dated from middle school through high school and these students had the best study skills. Throughout the study, students who dated more were rated by teachers as having worse study skills. The earlier and more frequently a child dated, especially starting in middle school, the more likely he or she was to have used alcohol or drugs. The lead researcher speculates that early dating is just one aspect of a pattern of high-risk behaviors.
She also suggests that the emotional complications of dating, including feeling jealous, feeling anxious, and being rejected or jilted, distract children from studying and cause depressive symptoms. These may be more than a middle school student can handle. There is plenty of time. De-emphasize pairing-off. Impose a curfew.

Reuters Health – Coaches who teach young male athletes about respectful relationship behaviors may be able to help prevent dating violence and aggressive behavior toward female peers, a U. Researchers tested the effectiveness of Coaching Boys Into Men, a program that seeks to prevent dating violence and sexual assault by enlisting coaches to speak frankly with middle-school male athletes about how they should – and should not – treat the opposite sex. Altogether, the study involved to year old boys.
Roughly two-thirds of male athletes had dating experience. Previous research found Coaching Boys Into Men effective for high school athletes, but less was known about whether it would work with middle school students who typically have shorter sports seasons and less formal athletics programs, Miller said. In the current study, athletic coaches at schools that were randomly assigned to participate in the program received hour-long training sessions with advocates from local rape crisis centers and domestic violence agencies.
Then, over 12 weeks, coaches talked to athletes about things like the difference between respectful and disrespectful relationship behaviors, myths promoting male sexual aggression and positive bystander intervention when peers exhibit aggressive behavior toward girls. Even so, the study suggests coaches may be able to have tough conversations with boys that many parents may not initiate, said Angela Frederick Amar, dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, who co-authored an editorial accompanying the study.
Coaches and parents can and should step in to provide boys with clear messages about respectful behavior toward girls to help counter the violent, aggressive messages they get from television, music, movies, and video games, Amar said.
